Its fairly conventional by Coltrane standards as it is relatively early on in his career and these are all songs synonymous with Monk. As such, its arguably more of a Monk record as its Coltrane joining his band. The performances though are incredible by both men; each is given freedom is express themselves and the interplay is perfect. The sets have a lovely ebb and flow to them in terms of song choices and the sound quality is very good. I cannot speak highly enough of this - its my favourite Monk recording album and I dont think he ever made a bad one. The guy was a genius, as was Coltrane, and the two of them together is everything youd hope it would be. For anyone who likes loves Coltrane andor Monk this is an absolute must. The nature of Monks tunes- melodic and individualistic as they are, seem to preclude jamming of the open ended, indulgent variety. That is not to say that Coltrane doesnt get to blow, because as Blue Monk suggests, he can and does but it is all contained in a well defined musical structure. To round off, what is a very satisfying disc, the exemplary notes make for a good read and the very detailed and warm recorded sound captures the group in their full glory. The short-lived Thelonious Monk-John Coltrane quartet had been playing regularly for several months prior to this concert so the level of understanding between them was high. The 9 tracks come from the early and late show with Monk sounding happy to be playing the Carnegie concert grand piano and Coltrane in inspired form on tenor. Ahmed Abdul-Malik(bass) Shadow Wilson(drums) are supportive throughout. This superbly recorded live album is an important find and absolutely essential for all fans of Monk Coltrane. I recommend you explore their creativity - throughout their careers. I was disappointed and dont even consider it to be one of the best Thelonious Monk live albums, much preferring Live at the IT Club from 1964 with Charlie Rouse and the In Action and Misterioso recordings from the Five Spot with Johnny Griffin in 1958. This is a comparatively restained performance by Coltrane without the squawks and squeals that appear in much of his music.
